The Different Types of Voice Over Styles Explained

Voice over is a booming industry and nearly 53.2% of voice over work is in animation. However, there is much more to voice over than you may know.

In fact, there are numerous different types of voice over styles that you need to be aware of so that you can find the best type for your project. Here are the four most common types of voice overs.

1. Commercial

Around 8% of voice actors work in television commercials. While it can be a small industry, it can also be the most lucrative.

There are endless styles, tones, and formats that commercial voice overs can have.

This allows actors the chance to present a diverse range of talent that can be a boon to advertisers and marketing teams.

When searching for the right commercial voice talent, consider the style of your advertisement and what type of tone you want to convey.

2. Animation

Animation is possibly the most well-known voice over niche, and it can also present the greatest amount of talent to choose from.

With a well-developed reel of various voices, styles, and emotions, voice actors can explore possibilities in numerous projects that are constantly expanding.

Similar to the above, when casting for animation, consider the tone you need to set and what kinds of voices the characters need to have.

3. Podcasts

Podcast voice-over can take many forms, from show hosting to voicing characters in elaborate stories.

This style can require a great amount of clarity and consistency.

For example, if you're casting a character in a story podcast, the voice you choose will need to stand out enough to allow listeners to identify the character, while also expressing enough emotion to convey the correct tone of the piece.

4. Audiobooks

Audiobook voiceovers can range from simple narration to more elaborate character voicing

The type of voice you want to use will depend on the genre of the book.

Children's books may benefit more from distinct and emotive character voices, while autobiographies may call for a more classic narration style.

When it comes to deciding which type of voice over is right for you, consider your project and which style it would be best suited for.

With all of this in mind, you can start finding the right type of talent for all of your projects.
